How it works

CTC’s service area continues to expand as we seek to fulfill our cooperative’s mission of providing technology solutions to those who need it most. Building new fiber internet networks allows us to connect residents and businesses to our ultra-fast, high-speed reliable internet and other services. The timeline for construction of a new fiber network varies greatly – from a couple of months to over a year – and may depend on seasonal conditions, physical terrain, funding requirements, permitting, and/or contractor schedules. In general, expansion of our network in new areas consists of the following phases.

Step 1

Engineering & Permitting

The network is designed and engineered, and permits are secured from various entities, which can take from a few days to over a year. Your property will be staked to show the path for burying a fiber line, and CTC will work with Gopher State One Call to locate and flag any public underground utilities. It’s important to inform CTC about any private underground lines you have, such as sprinkler systems or dog fences.

Step 2

Orders Processed

Sales/Services Orders Processed – our sales and marketing teams reach out to households and businesses in the area to see if they are interested in services. The earlier we’re able to receive commitment from families and businesses, the more efficiently and quickly we’re able to construct the network and get services turned up.

Step 3

Pre-Installation of Equipment

Pre-Installation of Equipment – if you commit to getting services from CTC, one of our technicians will visit your property to discuss and place equipment on the outside and inside of your buildings.

Step 4

Mainline Construction of Network

CTC’s sub-contractors construct the mainline portion of the fiber network. Like a critical artery of the heart, this extends our fiber network from a local “Control Office” to various roads, neighborhoods, and entire towns.

Step 5

Drops Plowed to Property

A CTC-approved contractor will be on your property, burying a fiber cable from the road to your building(s). Our contractors do their best to prevent disturbances to ditches and yards but if things ‘get messy’, they will attempt to restore the ground to its original state. Note: please be patient as they may come back to do this after the construction process is complete.

Step 6

Splicing and/or Testing of Fiber

A CTC employee or contractor will visit your property to splice the fiber from the buried cable to the CTC box that is attached to your building(s). Meanwhile, services are connected and tested on the newly constructed network infrastructure. A member of our team will contact you when your home or business is ready to connect to the new network.

Step 7

Installation of Services

Depending on what services you subscribe to, a CTC technician may visit you to connect devices while sharing helpful tips and support materials. (Don’t forget to download CTC’s Complete WiFi app before they stop by!)
