The power of partnership with electric cooperatives

The latest in technology and services to make lives better, coupled with member demands for broadband is a key driver for electric cooperatives. CTC has established strong and lasting relationships with electric cooperatives – like Arrowhead Electric, Mille Lacs Energy Cooperative, and Meeker Electric Cooperative – to expand fiber to improve their operations and bring high-speed, reliable internet to their members and customers. CTC has the experience and has made the technology investment to help electric coops execute and maintain
their fiber networks.

CTC and Arrowhead Electric Cooperative have enjoyed a fruitful partnership over the years, primarily focused on expanding broadband connectivity in rural areas. The collaboration began in 2011 when Arrowhead Electric Cooperative reached out to CTC after receiving funding to construct a fiber network for their communities. CTC provided essential support in marketing, engineering, switching, technical consulting, and installations, which was crucial as Arrowhead Electric had extensive experience in power but was new to telecom.

Since the partnership began, there has been significant growth, with more than a 65% increase in connectivity, enabling many customers to finally receive the high-speed internet they needed. The partnership has continued to thrive, with CTC providing ongoing support and exploring new opportunities for growth and service expansion. This collaboration exemplifies how two companies can work together to bring essential services to underserved communities.

When MLEC initially provided internet through satellite resale and limited fixed wireless, they saw room for improvement. After Arrowhead Electric Cooperative completed its FTTP project, MLEC invited them to discuss the initiative. In 2014, Minnesota launched the Border to Border Broadband grant program. Following thorough discussions with Arrowhead and CTC, MLEC applied for Phase 1 broadband funding in 2016, which was successful. MLEC continues its phased build-out today.

CTC supports MLEC by delivering a range of internet, voice, and customer services, along with flexible staffing support as needed. This partnership has significantly enhanced broadband services for MLEC members.

CTC’s partnership with Meeker Energy began in 2016 when CTC started meeting with Meeker Energy to explore the feasibility of entering the broadband space. This collaboration deepened in January 2022, when Meeker Energy enlisted CTC’s expertise to stay informed about state and federal legislative developments related to broadband. CTC’s guidance helped Meeker Energy identify and capitalize on broadband grants, positioning them for growth and expansion. Between 2022 and December 2024, CTC and Meeker worked together to improve operational efficiencies and scale Meeker Energy’s broadband business, leveraging numerous state and federal grant awards. CTC supports Meeker by providing installation, provisioning, and technical support as needed.

In 2024, Meeker sought CTC’s assistance to enhance its brand awareness through general marketing efforts and a rebrand of Meeker Vibrant Broadband. This rebranding initiative extended to Meeker’s Energy’s brand, further solidifying their partnership.

In 2024, CTC and Meeker Energy launched MC Fiber, a construction company specializing in fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) work.
